Skin and/or eye irritation can be caused by a number of things:
High or low pH:
Maintain pH from 7.4 – 7.6 for the best bather comfort. For chlorinated or brominated pools, use chlorine neutraliser when testing pH to ensure accurate readings.
High sanitiser/oxidiser residuals:
Maintain the free chlorine residual from 1.5 – 3.0 ppm, or the total bromine residual from 2.0 – 4.0 ppm for residential and 4.0 – 6.0 for commercial pools.
Combined chlorine (chloramines):
The total chlorine residual should equal the free chlorine residual.
Make sure that the water is balanced properly for the sanitiser type. Have a complete water analysis performed once a month and follow the ALEX recommendations.
