As with halogen sanitised pools there are many reasons why a Soft Swim pool can become cloudy or hazy. The first step in clearing the water in these cloudy pools is to determine the most likely cause and act quickly before the problem gets worse.

Filtration and Circulation

Make sure that the pump and filter are in proper working order. Has the filter been backwashed regularly and cleaned recently with BioGuard Kleen-It? If not then BioGuard Kleen-It is the filter cleaner of choice. Improper filter maintenance can cause cloudy water and also lead to algae and bacterial growth. If the pump and filter are working, is the pool circulating properly? Are the main drain and all of the skimmers open and free of debris? Are the return jets pointed slightly downward in a circular fashion and is the pump running at least 10 - 12 hours per day?


Heavy rains and larger than normal bather loads can temporarily overload your filtration system with dirt, suntan lotions, etc. During periods of heavy bather load such as pool parties run the pump and filter 24 hours a day to keep up with the increased workload.

Regular Maintenance

Proper pool maintenance is important to keeping a pool clean and clear. Regular brushing and vacuuming will keep dirt and debris from collecting and inhibit algae and bacterial growth. Leaves and other organics that are allowed to collect in the pool can increase the demand on Soft Swim Clarifier and Bactericide. Another part of proper pool maintenance is correct chemical balance. Improper chemical balance can cause cloudy water as well as eye/skin irritation and premature deterioration of pumps, heaters and liners. Have Soft Swim Algaecide, Bactericide, and Clarifier all been added regularly and maintained properly? The regular maintenance of all three products is important to maintaining a clear pool. If  necessary, determine the amount of Soft Swim bactericide that is needed to top up the biguanide level to 50 ppm using the Soft Swim Test Kit and Pool Care Calculator. Add an initial dose of Soft Swim Algaecide (1 litre/95,000 litres) and 3.7 litres/40,000 litres of Soft Swim Clarifier. If product has not been maintained and algae has developed, a double shock (7.2 litres/40,000 litres) of Soft Swim Clarifier may be required.

Incompatible Chemicals

The introduction of foreign chemicals to the pool should always be avoided. Fertilisers, household detergents, as well as certain pool chemicals may be incompatible with the Soft Swim Bactericide. Only add products to the pool that are recommended for use in Soft Swim pools. Consult the Soft Swim Dealer Reference Manual for a listing of compatible and incompatible pool products. Always avoid washing chemicals used around the yard and pool deck into the pool. The corrective action for this type of problem depends on the incompatible chemical and the quantity that was added to the pool.


When initially addressing how to clear a hazy or cloudy Soft Swim pool, investigate the physical aspects of the pool, filtration and circulation, first. If there is a problem with the filtration system no amount of pool products will be able to clear the pool. Correct all physical problems before attempting to clear the pool by chemical methods. Next top up Soft Swim B to 50 ppm, then add the initial (start-up) dosages of Soft Swim A and C. Finally, consider the use of a water clarifier and filter aid such as BioGuard Polysheen and Quick Clear.

Soft Swim Filter Aid and Flocculent

Soft Swim Filter Aid and Flocculent is an excellent tool for clearing up cloudy and hazy Soft Swim pools. This product should be used only after checking for the other factors that can lead to a cloudy pool. For example, if a filter malfunction is the reason a pool is cloudy, the use of Soft Swim F may not clear the pool or may clear it only temporarily. The pool will continue to turn cloudy until the filter is repaired. Soft Swim F is an excellent filter aid. To use Soft Swim F as a filter aid in cartridge and sand filters, pre-dissolve 230 - 460 grams of Soft Swim F in a bucket of water for pools ranging from 37,000 - 130,000 litres and pour slowly into the skimmer with the pump running. Aluminium sulfate forms a white floc, Al(OH)3, which coats the cartridge or top layer of sand. This floc is a finer filter media which effectively traps small particles that might pass through an uncoated filter. Run the filter continuously 24 - 48 hours or until the pool clears. If the pool does not clear, clean the filter and repeat as necessary. If the filter pressure increases 8 - 10 psi above the clean filter pressure, backwash and rinse the filter appropriately. The attached graph illustrates how effective Soft Swim F can be when used as a filter aid. In the graph, the shaded region indicates the 0.0 - 0.3 NTU range that represents clear water. The three pools in the graph below are actual field pools that had turbidity measurements of 0.39 NTU (slightly cloudy), 0.64 NTU (cloudy), and 1.1 NTU (very cloudy). Turbidity is a measure of the clarity of water that is recorded as NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units). Dramatically shown on the graph is the rapid reduction in turbidity in these pools that resulted in crystal clear water. In cases where a pool is extremely cloudy and a filter aid might not get the job done on the first treatment, the best option is to floc the pool with Soft Swim F. Clean the filter according to the manufacturers recommendations. Fill the pool to the top of the skimmer box and turn the pump off. Pre-dissolve Soft Swim F at the rate of 460 grams per 25,000 litres and broadcast the solution over the entire pool surface. Allow 24 - 48 hours for the floc to settle to the bottom of the pool and vacuum to waste. If some of the floc becomes resuspended, allow an additional 24 hours for it to settle and slowly vacuum to waste. Check and adjust the pH and alkalinity as necessary.
