What Is Normalization?

Normalization is an internal calibration procedure used by the AccuScan strip reader. It is particularly important when testing pH but will also contribute to the correct functioning of the unit. The procedure requires a special Normalization Test Strip with three pads coloured red, white and blue, and must be repeated once every 15 days. As a reminder, the ALEX program will automatically prompt the user when normalization needs to be performed.

Normalization Procedure

1. Turn the AccuScan unit on. After the initial version control message, the LCD screen will display the text BEGIN TEST PROCEDURE.
2. Start ALEX and proceed to the Pool Test or Spa Test window.
3. Click the F2 button to obtain a new test record. The window will now appear similar to this:

4. Click the AccuScan button in ALEX. If the unit has not been normalized in the last 15 days, ALEX will automatically prompt you with this message:

5. Click the OK button to proceed. You will now see this window:

6. Alternatively, if you wish to perform a manual normalization at any other time during the 15-day period, click on the box next to the word Normalization in the above window and ensure a tick appears in the box, as depicted above.
7. Click the Perform Selected Tests button. The following message will appear:

8. Place the normalization test strip on the AccuScan tray and, when the READY FOR TEST message appears on the LCD screen, push one of the green buttons on the AccuScan to begin the normalization.
9. After the usual 10-second countdown, the tray will retract into the AccuScan and the message ANALYZING... Hard Standard will appear on the LCD screen. The normalization process takes only a few seconds. Upon completion, the following message will appear:

10. Click the OK button to return to normal testing operations.

Storage and Handling of Normalization Test Strips

The normalization test strip must be handled with due care. Three cardinal rules apply:

  • NEVER touch the three coloured pads as your fingers could contaminate them and interfere with the normalization process.
  • ALWAYS store the strip flat in the accompanying black sleeve when not in use.
  • NEVER dip the strip into water. The strip must remain dry.

One strip is supplied no charge with each AccuScan unit purchased. However, in the event that you lose or damage the strip, you can obtain a replacement through Bio-Lab at $30 (price effective as at 5 November 2001).
