Copies of the US help file for the ALEX program were issued to Brand and Account Managers late in 1999. In the software "encyclopaedia" section of this file, there is a statement that water clarifiers cannot be used on spas equipped with ozonators. This advice was based on several reports of debris floating in spas received by the Technical Services Department at Decatur during 1991 and 1992. Investigation of the debris revealed that some of these particles were pieces of biofilm which had broken loose from piping. Three of the samples were determined to be polymerised water clarifier molecules. Further questioning of the spa owners revealed that ozonators were present in all three instances, and that the appearance of the debris followed the addition of a water clarifier to the spa.

In the period from 1992 to 1996, however, many reports were received from consumers that indicated no adverse reactions when using water clarifiers with ozone in spas. Consequently, in conjunction with Watkins Manufacturing, Technical Services conducted trials utilising a small CD ozonator on a spa in the Decatur facility. Spa water clarifiers were introduced at varying dosages, as high as triple the recommended dosage. Additionally, water balance parameters were changed over the course of the investigation to insure that these factors were also examined.

During the entire trial, no adverse reactions were observed. Based on the results of this investigation, Bio-Lab now recommends that water clarifiers can be used in spas which have an ozonator. In the ALEX water analysis software encyclopaedia, the recommendation to avoid the use of water clarifiers with ozonators will be removed.
