Irrespective of the type of pool filtration system used, scale and rust deposits, greases, oils and other organic wastes can accumulate over time and impair filter performance, resulting in poor water quality, reduced sanitiser efficiency and increased likelihood of algal infestation. BioGuard Filter Brite not only restores the efficiency of sand, diatomaceous earth (DE) and cartridge filters by removing these contaminants, it also sanitises filter media and whitens filter cartridges.

Background

Filterable debris can be categorised into two main groups:

1. Oils and greases (eg. body lotions, body fats and oils, cosmetics, non-specific pollutants, etc.). High molecular weight oils and greases have the ability to coat filter media (sand, DE) and cartridges, rendering the media or cartridge incapable of effective filtration. The filter is said to be "blinded off". This behaviour is exaggerated in situations where there are regularly high bather loads or elevated water temperatures, the latter increasing the liberation of body fats and oils from the bathers.

2. Scale, rust and particulate deposits (eg. calcification, skin, hair, lint, etc.). Scale and particulate deposits harden and cake over time, reducing overall filter media and cartridge efficiency.

An integral part of maintaining crystal clear and safe pool water, the filter is responsible for removing these suspended debris from the pool water. When operated for the first time filled with new media or fitted with a new cartridge, the filter's efficiency is as high as it will ever be. As the filter ages, it accumulates debris that are not easily or effectively removed through normal cleaning and backwashing procedures. Water clarity is severely compromised, chemical consumption increases in a forlorn attempt to compensate, and filter cleaning and general pool maintenance becomes constant chores. Efficiency is reduced eventually to the point where it is no longer adequate, leading to the premature replacement of the media or the cartridge.

BioGuard Filter Brite easily and effectively removes these accumulated debris to vastly improve filter efficiency.

Product Description

Filter Brite is a granular, pre-measured product which is easily used to clean sand, DE and cartridge filters. Its highly alkaline formulation emulsifies greases, fats and oils so that they can be rinsed away, keeping the media or cartridge free from potentially damaging coatings. Filter Brite also includes scale, rust and particulate reducing agents designed to loosen and dissolve debris so that wastes can be washed out of the filter with ease. As a result, filtration and circulation are improved, giving better water clarity, decreased operating costs and reduced pool maintenance.

Having sodium dichloroisocyanurate as a part of its formulation, Filter Brite also sanitises filter media and cartridges, killing off potentially harmful bacteria and other microorganisms. Filters and the debris that accumulate provide an excellent breeding ground for microorganisms. Regular use of Filter Brite aids in controlling bacteria, providing a safer environment for bathers and reducing the demand on the pool's regular sanitiser.

As a general rule, filter housings, media and cartridges should be cleaned with Filter Brite at the start of every summer season or after a fresh fill.

Product Application - Sand Filters

1. CAUTION: Always wear rubber gloves and eye protection when using cleaning products. Filter Brite is extremely alkaline and can cause severe burns to eyes, nose, throat and skin. Read all Safety and First Aid Directions before opening or using. If swallowed, DO NOT induce vomiting - give water and ring a doctor or Poisons Information Centre (Phone: 13 1126) immediately.

2. Backwash the filter according to the manufacturer's directions.

3. Turn the pump OFF, return the filter dial valve to the NORMAL position and remove the strainer lid on the pump.

4. Dissolve a sachet of Filter Brite in 1 - 2 litres of clean water, then pour the solution through the strainer basket and turn the pump back ON.

5. When the strainer is empty, immediately turn the pump OFF again to prevent Filter Brite from passing into the swimming pool.

6. Replace the strainer lid and leave for a minimum of 6 hours. Leaving the filter to soak overnight is ideal.

7. Thoroughly backwash the filter and resume normal operation.

8. If foaming occurs after resuming operation, apply SpaGuard Antifoam Concentrate to the pool water as per label directions.

Product Application - DE and Cartridge Filters

1. CAUTION: Always wear rubber gloves and eye protection when handling filter cartridges and using cleaning products.

2. Remove the filter cartridge or elements from the housing and hose off any visible debris.

3. Mix a pre-measured sachet of Filter Brite with water in a clean appropriately sized plastic bucket and allow the cartridge or elements to soak in the solution overnight. Brushing or scrubbing is not generally required.

4. Rinse the cartridge or elements thoroughly with water.

5. Reinstall the cartridge or elements and resume normal operation.

6. If foaming occurs after the cartridge or elements are replaced, apply SpaGuard Antifoam Concentrate to the pool water as per label directions.

Filter Brite should be used every time the cartridge is removed from its housing. This procedure will ensure adequate filter efficiency throughout the life of the cartridge, guaranteeing better quality water, reduced operating costs, less work and longer cartridge life. A spare cartridge capable of being rotated will allow sufficient time for proper cleaning to take place.
