SpaGuard Filter Brite is a product designed to restore the efficiency of cartridge filters by removing scale and rust deposits, greases, oils and organic wastes, whilst sanitising and whitening the cartridge. The contaminants listed here accumulate over time and impair filter performance, affecting overall water quality and sanitiser efficiency.

Background

A spa or hot tub filter is responsible for removing filterable debris from spa water in an effort to keep it clean and crystal clear. When a filter is first used with a brand new cartridge, its filtration ability is as efficient as it will ever be. As the filter cartridge ages, it accumulates debris which are not easily or effectively removed through normal cleaning procedures. Filtration efficiency is reduced to a point where it is no longer adequate, leading to the premature replacement of the cartridge.

Filterable debris can be categorised into two main groups:

1. Oils and greases (eg. body lotions, body fats and oils, cosmetics, non-specific pollutants, etc.). High molecular weight oils and greases have the ability to coat filter cartridges, rendering the surface incapable of effective filtration. The filter is said to be "blinded off". This behaviour is exaggerated in a spa environment due to both the high bather loads per unit volume of water and the elevated water temperature, which increases the liberation of body fats and oils from the bathers.

2. Scale, rust and particulate deposits (eg. calcification, skin, hair, lint, etc.). Scale and particulate deposits harden and cake over time, reducing overall filter area and cartridge efficiency. Again, this behaviour is exaggerated in a spa environment due to the higher water temperature and the resultant increased tendency for scaling to occur.

When the waste material accumulates to the point where filtration efficiency is severely hindered, the spa owner is faced with reduced water quality and increased operating costs. Water clarity is compromised, chemical consumption increases in a forlorn effort to compensate, and filter cleaning and spa maintenance becomes a constant chore. SpaGuard Filter Brite easily and effectively removes this accumulated waste to vastly improve filter efficiency.

Product Description

Filter Brite is a granular, pre-measured product which is easily used to clean spa and hot tub cartridges. Its highly alkaline formulation emulsifies greases, fats and oils so that they can be rinsed away, keeping the cartridge free from potentially damaging coatings. Filter Brite also includes scale, rust and particulate reducing agents designed to loosen and dissolve debris so that wastes can be washed off the cartridge with ease. As a result, filtration and circulation are improved, giving better water clarity, decreased operating costs and reduced spa maintenance.

Filter Brite sanitises filter cartridges, killing off potentially harmful bacteria and other microorganisms. Filters and the debris they accumulate provide an excellent breeding ground for microorganisms. Regular use of Filter Brite aids in controlling bacteria and providing a safe environment for bathers.

Product Application

1. Remove the filter cartridge from its housing and hose off any visible debris.

2. Mix a pre-measured pouch of Filter Brite with water in a clean plastic bucket. Allow the cartridge to soak in the solution overnight. Brushing or scrubbing is not generally required.

3. Rinse the cartridge thoroughly with water, reinstall it and return the spa to operation.

4. If foaming occurs after the cartridge is replaced, use SpaGuard Antifoam Concentrate®.

Important: Always wear rubber gloves and eye protection when handling spa filters and using cleaning products.

Filter Brite should be used every time the filter is removed from its housing. This procedure will ensure adequate filter efficiency throughout the life of the cartridge, guaranteeing better quality water, reduced operating costs, less work and longer cartridge life. As a general rule, the filter cartridge and housing should be cleaned at each draining. A spare cartridge capable of being rotated will allow sufficient time for proper cleaning to take place.
