Typically, mineral adjuster and chemicals are applied to pools and spas for very specific reasons: to balance water, kill and control bacteria and algae, oxidise organic wastes, increase clarity, or prevent stains. In other words, there is no one-for-all, all-for-one treatment product. There is one product, however, that cuts across many of those lines and performs a range of functions. That product is BioGuard Optimiser, and it works by introducing a different technology to the water. This new element, is mined in several regions in North America (and the technology is the active ingredient in eyewash products that "get the red out").


One of the key advantages for these products is their across-the-board compatibility with other pool and spa treatments. Optimiser meshes well with all types of chlorine and bromine programs as well as many of the alternative sanitiser systems. Ionisers, ozone and chlorine generators (salt) will all operate more efficiently and with less potential for problems.


So what does Optimiser do in pool water?


1. Optimiser enhances chemical effectiveness. "Optimiser reduces the carbon dioxide content," this helps in creating an environment which is less conductive to the growth of algae by removing an important source for its growth. Please remember, however, that Optimiser is not an algae killer or preventative on its own, but does improve the chemical efficiencies of the 3 Step System so added benefits in this area are attained. The improvement in chemical efficiencies helps make lower operating costs more attainable. This is especially true with a bromine system where higher operating costs tend to occur.

2. Optimiser works to enhance water clarity. It does this by increasing the water’s ability to absorb calcium and other minerals, metals and salts commonly found in pool water. Customer feedback has been overwhelming in support of the improved appearance of the water. In addition to an improved look to the water, the added solubility of minerals, metals and salts helps to decrease the potential for scale formations and metal staining (ideal for alternative sanitisers, liquid and calcium based chlorines, hard water areas, etc.).

3. Optimiser increases overall water comfort by reducing skin and eye irritation. As mentioned earlier, this chemistry is used in applications where reducing irritation is required. BioGuard Optimiser is the vehicle for the dosing of pools. Prior to applying the product, it is advised that the water be properly balanced in accordance with proper water balance procedures. The application rate for Optimiser is 1.8 kg per 10,000 litres to establish the recommended level of 26 to 32 ppm. This initial application should be added in 3 equal amounts at least 8 hours apart. The granular product is designed to be broadcast evenly over the surface of the pool with the pump and filter in operation. Please note the only way you lose the product is through splash-out or back-washing. Therefore, once the initial application is made, minor and infrequent additions would be all that is required unless a substantial amount of water is drained from the pool. Monthly testing for the Optimiser residual ensures that the concentration does not fall below the minimum end of the acceptable range. A test kit is available to record the levels and assist with recommendations.


BioGuard Optimiser has a pH of 9.4. Therefore, pH neutralisation will be required after each Optimiser addition. A "Rule of Thumb" exists to assist in the determination of the amount of BioGuard Lo'N'Slo required:


50% of the weight of Optimiser will be required in Lo'N'Slo to neutralise the pH effect.


For example, if 18 kg of Optimiser is required in a 100,000 litre pool, 9 kg of Lo'N'Slo would be required to return the pH to where it started from. The pH neutralisation should be done 1 hour after each stage of the Optimiser additions. BioGuard Optimiser should not be added if the pH is outside the acceptable range of 7.4-7.6.


One final note on Total Alkalinity testing after applying Optimiser. It is not uncommon to find that the total alkalinity reading has increased after the product’s addition. This is due to the product’s ability to titrate as total alkalinity in the test and its ability to provide some buffering effect to the water. As this is not the carbonate form of alkalinity, it is not necessary to reduce the level if the range has increased above acceptable.


In summary, BioGuard Optimiser is a product which does improve pool water in a number of key areas. Improved chemical efficiencies for reduce operating cost, improved water quality and improved comfort are all benefits attributed to Optimiser. It also proves to be a very economical treatment when consideration is given to the frequency of additions and the positive performance of the product.
